Winter Mourn

An experiment in Germanic alliteration.

Tervuren Park, Belgium (C) Stephen Buttigieg 2024

This was an interesting one. Written to the Meet the Bar with a Beat challenge set up by DVerse. I do like a bit of alliteration but the flow of this Germanic verse is different to what I would usually use.

Feel free to comment, feedback is always appreciated.

A Night at the Prompts

Sharing poetry with pals

If every cloud has a silver lining. Then for the Cumulonimbus that was the pandemic, the silver lining came in the form of friendships made online, particularly on Instagram. I had already joined the poetry community prior to the breakout of COVID-19, however, during lockdown online activities increased, and the number of live events flourished. It was somewhere in the virtual world that I bumped into Andrew Horner, better known as Drew, an incredibly talented young man whose spoken word reels were always captivating (Check out his bio below). We quickly struck up a friendship and started organising live shows together, until I had to take a pause to concentrate on my forthcoming book.

Now that my book is ready to launch, we have decided to organise a couple of live shows on Instagram. We will be reading poems written to the prompts found on the slideshow to the right. Although the deadline for submissions is in a few hours we try to include late submissions in our show when possible, or read them on the following live so if you fancy tackling any of them, please do. You can find more details on our Instagram accounts.

Here is a short poem about the Sahara Desert I wrote to one of the prompts.

He has just released a spoken word album called ‘Strong Enough To Break’ which is eight tracks that delve into the complexities of the human condition. His words are accompanied by stunning scores by Tomás Almeida from Eleven Tales Music. Andrew aims to use his pen and poetry to break down the stigmas on mental health, suicide awareness and other difficult topics, society is still uncomfortable with. A Walk Through a Cemetery

Hidden beneath the moss

Last year I paid a visit to the Brussels Cemetery for a poetry event organised by @spoken_word_bxl

There was one particular grave that caught my eye. It had been covered in emerald, green moss and the inscription on the gravestone was illegible. Despite the melancholic atmosphere it was still a beautiful sight, and I could not resist taking a photo of the grave.

It reminded me that we all are given a short thread of time, some shorter than others, and once we come to the end of that string, all we leave behind are memories, and perhaps a legacy. With time, for most of us, even that fades. I suppose I was in a solemn mood when i started writing the poem you can find in the images, but the rich green still managed to lift my spirits (no pun intended). In the end I was thankful for the time that I do have. The time I can share with those who are important to me.

I don’t profess to know what happens when we eventually perish, I am no prophet. All I know is that once I am here, I might as well do something worthwhile, and hopefully leave this place in a better state than I found it. If there is another life, another time, another place, then I will face that when I get there. I just hope that when I go, the moss will be equally kind with me, and dress my resting place in resplendent green.

Lovers’ Day

Valentine’s fun

Valentine’s day has different meanings for different people. There are the young who are in their first love, those who are suffering heartbreak, those who have most their loved one and those who are happily ageing together.

They will identify with this poem. And don’t forget we shouldn’t be talking about love if we are not ready to speak out against hate.

A Love Poem

When young love
becomes old love
nothing much changes
except the creaking of the bones
becomes louder than
the creaking of the bed

Old & UnWise

A Haphazard Collection of Poetry and Thought

It is really hard to describe how excited I was yesterday to find out that Old & UnWise had started to appear for pre-order on some websites (see below). I have already had poems published in a couple of anthologies, however the poetry in this book is all mine. It has been extremely difficult to decide which poems to include and which to leave out. To find the right mix. I really want it to reflect me as a person so the range of topics and styles was very important to me.

I am not just about love poems. I am not just about dark poems. I am not just a dreamer, but a thinker too. I have clear beliefs about social justice and worry about the world we are leaving for the next generation. But I love to have fun too. I love to laugh but I am not afraid to cry. I do hope the book will convey all of that and have something for everyone, whatever they may be feeling. These 172 poems spread along 242 pages are what I have to offer.

If you would like to pre-order Old & Unwise A Haphazard Collection of Poetry and Thought You can do so on Amazon or Barnes and Noble and will be available for order from all book shops.

Signed copies are still available for pre-order on the home page

Cover Up Job

A meeting of two minds

Although I was born in the UK and my mother tongue is English I was born of Maltese parentage. In Maltese there is an expression which loosely translates as The first that eats is the eye. When I decided to put together Old & UnWise – A Haphazard Collection of Poetry and Thought I knew that I wanted a dynamic image on the front cover., something that would not only catch people’s attention but also draw their curiosity.

There was a talented young poet from Ghana who had caught my attention, not only for his poetry but also for the interesting artwork that he was posting. I had crossed paths with Jude Ansah (IG handle @poetjla) several times on Instagram lives and had struck up a friendship with him so it was only natural that I approached him with the idea of designing the cover for the book.

After several discussions we decided to go with a face showing both the Old and the UnWise aspects of my character. That meant entertaining Jude with some dubious photos but he added a touch of magic and came up with the front cover design that has already come up with some rave comments even though the book will only be released next month. Once the front cover was done I left it in Jude’s hands to come up with something for the back cover and I think he really excelled. I cannot be happier with the overall design of the cover and I hope that anyone who purchases the book feels that the poetry matches Jude’s work

A few words about Jude: He is 28 and began his journey as a writer in 2014 while still attending high school, writing a poem for submission to the school magazine. After graduation, poetry became a hobby of his as he went on to write numerous pieces which ended up being published on his poetry blog “Poet JLA” on WordPress, which has over 146 poems since 2015. He has also performed some of his pieces at events such as “Poetry for The Rainmakers” and the Ashesi University Storytellers Club Event “Cafeteria Takeover”. He is also in the process of putting together his own anthology very soon. As the cover clearly shows Jude’s other interests include graphic design and creating digital art.

Distant Connections

A helping hand from across the seas

It is amazing how many generous people there are out there in this world of chaos. I discovered a number of them in the online poetry community. I had just started to get into a writing groove, after thirty plus years of abstaining from poetry writing, when the pandemic broke out. This only gave me more time to indulge into what was quickly becoming a passion.

I began to post some of my poems online and began to receive a lot of encouragement from fellow poets. Many encouraged me to take my poetry further and publish a book. One of those poets was Joseph M Holloway who goes by the handle @riddlingshrift online.

Joseph and I immediately found common ground since I am a former teacher and he is public school educator, coach, and mentor, who has aided thousands of students in their writing processes over the past 25 years.

Addressing the current social climate within the United States and around the globe has allowed him to couple students’ individual sensibilities with their appreciation and understanding of literature. He strongly believes that we, as citizens and human beings, are responsible for making our experiences meaningful for others in this ever-changing world. Most of his published writing involves insight into nature and matters of the heart.

It is Joseph’s experience as a mentor, and his passion for nature and social justice, that made him the ideal person to ask to read through my manuscript with a fine tooth comb and give constructive criticism. I am so glad that he agreed. The image shows an extract from the foreword he kindly wrote for “Old & UnWise – A Haphazard Collection for Poetry and Thought.

Out of this world

The Aliens and I received a book.

It was so good to receive the first hard copy proof of my book. Despite what the title of this blog says I did not receive the book from out of space, although my Alien friends may add some fuel for conspiracy theorists. I did actually write all of the poetry in it and to actually feel it in my hands was an extremely fulfilling moment.

The Aliens, however, are an integral part of this story. During the pandemic I chose to have them as a backdrop to all of my work meetings as well as any Instagram live I decided to join. The Aliens generated a lot of interest and helped perk up many a conversation. It has been said that they use telepathy to control my writing but if they do I can only promise that I am unaware of it . All I know is that now they are an integral part of my family.

In the next few hours I will be posting details of how to pre-order a signed copy of the book which will be found on the homepage.

Two Timing

Taking two perspectives to a prompt

Prompts are a great way to stimulate the writing experience. And there are so many out there. Here on WordPress, Instagram, Threads, a thing called X formerly called something else and Facebook to name but a few. The amount of prompts that are posted every day is quite impressive.

A really successful prompt is one that catches the imagination of other writers/poets. One such prompt came up this week, it immediately got me thinking what would “The Sound at the End of time” be. I ended up with two very different answers and wrote two poems accordingly. The first can be seen below:

The second poem takes a different vein of thought. They also take on different styles. I suppose both are a reflection of my character in very different ways. It was interesting to see the reaction each got on Instagram when I posted them earlier this week. Let me know which you prefer, if any. Comments are always welcome. And while you are at it please consider subscribing to my blog and website. Exciting news about my book is about to be released. Watch this space.

The Rave

Linked to dVerse Poetics – May I have This Dance?

I am pretty new to WordPress and have discovered a whole community of writers. I came across a prompt by Dverse related to poetry and dancing. I have decided to share one poem from Old & UnWise – A Haphazard Collection of Poetry and Thought which will be out in March 2024. I am a poet. My daughter is a dancer. So I had to share this one.

The Rave

Throbbing booming

    palpitating rhythms of life

Deep sonorous sounds

    reaching the heart in resonance

Causing the sanguine flow

    to turn into a rush

A rush of waves

    beating the beach

In synchronicity

And as we dance

    we leave fleeting footprints

    flirting with the sand

The sand that flows

    and keeps time

A gentle stream

    interrupted by an electronic metronome

Driving syncopated sine waves

    across the dance floor

The dance floor

    swept by stroboscopic lights

Bodies whirl

    in ancestral rhythms

Perforated in imagery

    by intermittent illumination

The intermittent illumination

    allows the mind

    to drift into drumbeat darkness

Emotions and sounds

    steer semi-autonomous limbs

    into tribal rituals

The tribal rituals

    of peace and war

Preparing for the hunt

The songs of plenty

The celebrations of love

The bonds of revelry

The bonds of revelry

    where the colours

    are the beats

The surrender and the freedom

    are merged into the one

The one

The feeling of self

The awareness of life

The pumping within

    and the thumping without

Joined in the abandonment

The abandonment

The rave
